Case study — Health and Social Care

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust
Extensive fabric upgrades across two live operational hospitals, delivered without a single disruption to hospital services.
- Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust
- Health and Social Care
- East Yorkshire
- 2 live hospitals

Background
For the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust we undertook extensive fabric upgrades across two live operational hospitals.
Our scope of works included full structural surveys, EWI removal and installation, lighting removal and reinstatement, replacement windows and doors, and extensive groundworks. Both hospitals remained fully operational throughout the works, requiring a specialist project delivery team experienced in complex, high-risk projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Cladding
- LED Lighting
- Doors & Windows
- Structural Repairs
- Groundworks
Delivery approach
Our approach centred on meticulous planning and strict programming to accommodate the sensitive hospital environment. Disruptive works were scheduled outside core hours to avoid patient interface, while robust access, security and emergency planning ensured continuity of hospital operations.
We accelerated the programme to meet the Trust’s funding deadlines and maximised social value by engaging 90% of our supply chain locally and recruiting a locally based site team.
Challenges & solutions
01 Live hospital environment
Delivering works in a fully operational hospital meant patient care, staff movement and emergency access could not be disrupted. We developed a detailed programme with input from the Trust’s estates team, scheduling noisy or disruptive activities outside of core hours. Clear communication and close coordination with hospital staff ensured works were phased safely, maintaining full access for patients and clinical teams at all times.
02 Tight funding-driven programme
The project had to be delivered within accelerated timescales to meet the Trust’s funding requirements. Our team introduced parallel working methods, carefully sequencing trades to minimise downtime. Progress was closely monitored through daily reporting and collaborative planning sessions with the client.
03 Integrating EWI and existing services
The scope required removal and reinstatement of external services such as lighting, alarms and air conditioning units, presenting risks to building operation and safety. We carried out detailed surveys and engaged specialist subcontractors early to ensure seamless service isolation, safe removal and prompt reinstatement.
Project success
Despite tight programme requirements, works were delivered on time and within budget.
- At no point during the project were hospital services disrupted
- Our supply chain was sourced 90% locally
- 99% of installations signed off without need for snagging
- Highly positive feedback from staff and patients alike
